But Halloween started as Samhain, and Samhain originated in Ireland.
Samhain (pronounced sow-in) is more than just costumes and candy.
It’s an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of harvest and the beginning of winter – the halfway point between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice.
For the Celts, Samhain was the most important fire festival of the year – a sacred turning point when the veil between the living and the dead was believed to be thinnest (more similar to how Día de Muertos is celebrated throughout the world).
Today, that ancient spirit is alive and well, woven into celebrations across Ireland in ways that are both deeply historic and wildly fun.

What Exactly Is Samhain?
This is a picture that shows what Ireland must have looked like many years ago during Samhain.
Bonfires burning on hilltops, entire communities gathering to mark the changing of the seasons, druids leading rituals of protection, and feasts lasting long into the night.
Samhain was both practical (marking the harvest and the darker half of the year) and spiritual (honoring ancestors and spirits).
Many Halloween traditions – like carving pumpkins (originally turnips!), dressing in costume to ward off spirits, and lighting candles in windows – trace their roots back to these Samhain customs.
Samhain is truly a living tradition that connects past and present.
And it’s funny how, once you learn about something, you start seeing it everywhere.
Because there are several places in the United States and beyond that hold festivals very similar to how Samhain was originally celebrated.
The Best Places to Celebrate Samhain in Ireland
Assuming I can convince you to go to Ireland during this time (you totally should!!), the inevitable next question is, “Okay – but, where do I go to really experience it authentically?”

But there are several places where you can celebrate it, learn about culture and history, and just have a great time.
1. Derry Halloween Festival
Regularly voted the world’s best Halloween celebration, Derry’s Halloween festival is legen-DERRY (ha, get it?). You’ll see parades, light shows, ghost tours, haunted houses, street performers, and a city buzzing with energy. It’s like stepping into a living, breathing Celtic carnival.
2. The Púca Festival (Co. Meath & Co. Louth)
This modern festival pays homage to Ireland’s Celtic roots in the Boyne Valley—an area rich with myth and legend. Expect fire installations, storytelling, folklore-inspired performances, and music. The festival is named after the mischievous spirit, the Púca, who appears at Samhain to create a little chaos.
3. Fire Festivals Across the Country
From smaller community gatherings to larger celebrations, fire is still at the heart of Samhain. In places like Tlachtga (the Hill of Ward in County Meath), you can experience ancient ritual reenactments on the very site where Samhain fires once burned thousands of years ago.
4. Haunted Castles & Ghostly Experiences
Ireland is full of haunted castles, but visiting during Samhain makes the experience all the more atmospheric. Leap Castle, Charleville Castle, and Kilmainham Gaol all offer an extra layer of chills this time of year.
