Where to Find the Best Christmas Markets In Ireland
Germany isn’t the only European country with holiday magic – and I’d argue, the Christmas markets in Ireland are a way underrated rival.
There’s something truly magical about Ireland at Christmastime.
Between twinkling lights, carol singing, and the smell of mulled wine drifting through the air, Christmas markets in Ireland are one of the best ways to soak up the festive season.
If you’re planning a winter trip to Ireland, or you happen to be living here during the holidays, these markets are the perfect way to experience Ireland’s charm, local crafts, and cozy holiday traditions.
So in this article, I’m sharing and comparing the best Christmas markets in Ireland, so you can make the most of your holidays there.
If you only have time for one Christmas market, though, I’d say go to Galway.
This is my favorite “city” in Ireland, anyway – though, once you’re there, I think you’ll agree that it hardly even feels like a city!
I share a bit more about that one in the list below, but I also share the others too in case your travels are taking you to those other places!

1. Galway Christmas Market
The Galway Christmas Market happens every year in Eye Square.
This is really the central hub of the city anyway, so it’s no surprise!
If you’re only going to visit one Christmas market in Ireland, make it Galway’s.
You’ll find it happening mid-November to late December.
It’s Ireland’s oldest and largest one.
You can expect more than 50 stalls selling handmade gifts, decorations, and delicious treats like bratwurst, crêpes, and roasted chestnuts.
There’s also a German-style beer tent, which is really fun since we typically think of Germany for Christmas markets!
They really do go all out – so you’ll also find a carousel, and even a giant Ferris wheel that gives you sparkling views over the city.
2. Wicklow Christmas Market
The Wicklow Christmas market takes place every year at Leitrim Place in Wicklow town.
Their Christmas market is so cute and charming!
If you can’t make it out to Galway, this is my second choice.
It’s quickly becoming a local favorite, too – so you might actually see quite a few Dubliners there!
Located by the coast in Wicklow Town, this market has so much.
You’ll find a Santa Express train, an eco-ice rink, live performances, and plenty of artisan food and craft vendors.
It’s one of the more family-friendly Christmas markets in Ireland, and it’s perfect for those who want to combine festive fun with a bit of seaside charm.
3. Belfast Christmas Market

The Belfast Christmas Market takes place at City Hall Grounds.
Technically in Northern Ireland, but well worth the mention, Belfast’s Christmas Market transforms the grounds of City Hall into a festive wonderland.
It’s known for its international food offerings – from French cheeses to Spanish paella to sweet Belgian waffles, and a wide range of artisan gifts.
There’s also a traditional German beer tent, live music, and rides for children, making it a great family outing.
Since Belfast is just two hours from Dublin by train, it’s easy to make a day trip of it.
4. Dublin Castle Christmas Market
The Dublin Christmas market takes place annually at beautiful Dublin Castle.
Dublin doesn’t host one giant Christmas market like Galway, but the Dublin Castle Christmas Market is a true highlight.
Set against the historic backdrop of Dublin Castle, it usually runs for about two weeks in December and features artisan stalls, carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides, and a festive light display inside the castle grounds.
Because of the shorter run time, it’s a good idea to plan ahead—this one tends to book out quickly, but it’s worth the effort for the magical setting alone.
5. Glow Cork Christmas Celebration
Cork’s Glow Christmas festival takes place in Bishop Lucey Park every year.
Most Americans only know Cork for the Rock of Cashel nearby.
But there are so many other things to see!
And they really go all out for Christmastime.
Cork’s Glow: A Cork Christmas Celebration turns the city into a festive playground every December.
You’ll find light displays, food stalls, and handmade gifts.
The atmosphere in Cork is warm, lively, and welcoming – perfect for anyone looking to soak up a bit of southern Irish Christmas spirit.
6. Waterford Winterval
Waterford’s Winterval event happens at several different places in Waterford City.
This page on the event’s website has really helpful info for getting there.
It’s about 2 hours from Ireland if you’re driving, closer to 3 hours on the train.
There are some prices for parking if you decide to drive out (listed at this link).
Winterval is so much more than a Christmas market, honestly!
It’s a whole city-wide celebration that includes festive parades, live performances, ice skating, storytelling, a carousel, and markets with crafts and seasonal treats.
It usually runs from late November through December and has something for everyone -families, couples, or solo travelers wanting to dive into the festive fun.
Honorable Mention: Buncrana Christmas Market
If you’re blessed to be staying in the Donegal area, the Buncrana Christmas Market is about an hour’s drive away from Derry or Donegal.
Donegal Town also does have a more local, comunnity-focused Christmas fair – which you can learn more about here.
